Conflict

According to Sociologist Lewis Coser that conflict occurs when those who control valued resources strive to protect their interests from those who hope to gain a share. Conflict can be a constructive and invigorating force that pre- vents a social system from becoming stagnant, unresponsive, or inefficient.

Conflictwhether it involves military buildups, violent clashes, or public debateis both a consequence and a cause of change. Any kind of change has the potential to trigger conflict between those who stand to benefit from the change and those who stand to lose because of it. Conflict can lead to change as well.
