Sir henry maine and anthropology

  • In his works, especially in Ancient Law (1861), Henry Maine dealt law with its origin, development, customs and beliefs. He considered as social science that studies the origin and social relationship of human being.
  • Status to contract - Maine stated that early societies in which social relations are dominated by status with "progressive" (complex) societies in which social relations are predominantly determined by contract. By contract Maine meant individual obligation arising "from the free agreement of individuals."
