The concept of association in sociology

Association is an arrangement for working together by a group to achieve some specified purposes or purpose. The emphasis is on organization and aim. It differs from community in several ways. Its membership is limited by the nature of its aim. An association is an arrangement which may be temporary or permanent.

The main characteristics of association are:

  1. Formal membership
  2. Fixed rules and procedures to follow
  3. Definite goals and deliberate interests
  4. The duties are legally bound
  5. Voluntary in service and also in membership
  6. Rights and duties for the members
  7. Corporate in character
