Anthropology of Religion

The anthropologists have formulated many theories on the origin of religion among people. Some of the major theories are animism, animatism and primitive monotheism. The beliefs in natural forces and supernatural forces and beings are being investigated. The religious traditions including the rituals, ceremonies among primitive and peasant societies are being investigated.

Practices under taboos and totemism are also being studied in great detail. The status and role of shamans, medicine men, and priests etc as important personalities in the magico-religious fields are also studied. Witchcraft and sorcery are examined as important aspects of primitive magic.
